St Baume itself is an ecological wonderland. Because of the shade created by the height of the mountain there are species of flora that grow nowhere else in the South of France. When I first visited the grotto, a sign in the museuem stated that all the early peoples who traveled through believed that the goddess of fertility inhabited the mountain. One can still understand why.
